Kerrang:
The Ghost of a Thousand
This Is Where The Fight Begins….
KKKKK

Holy Shit! Finally something wonderful is happening in UK hardcore again: the fire, the passion, the unbridles fucking vehemence, the fearless embrace of ugliness, the rejection of overly styled hair and endlessly contrived song writing – it’s all, finally, slowly, kicking its way unapologetically back to the foreground. First Gallows. Now The Ghost of a Thousand. Thank Christ for that.

On the appropriately titled ‘This Is Where The Fight Begins’, this Brighton quintet don’t just force you to sit up and listen, they grab you headfirst in a bloody great wall of relentless pummelling drums, meaty hooks couple with surprisingly intricate melodies, sinister, insistent (and frankly huge) guitars, and vocals so urgent – swinging between Bronx – style screaming and J Robbins style singing – Tom Lacey sounds like he is running from a lynch mob, resigned to being caught but desperate to go down fighting anyway.

‘…Fight’ is a call to arms from the very beginning. ‘Punk rock needs you again! Time to start spitting blood again! Generation X is dead!’ they announce on shit kicking opener ‘Bored of Math’. And if you’re not breathless enough after that, ‘Up To You’ declared bloody minded war on your senses three tracks in. Then ‘Black Art Number One’ opens with the line. ‘What a cunt. This world’ and you’re in love. What can not be emphasised enough thought, is that there is no holding back on this record. (‘We’d swim through a million quagmires to suck the cock of whatever just fucked you’, anyone?).

Over the course of these 10 searingly impassioned onslaughts, it all becomes very clear: The Ghost of a Thousand a re going to be hugely important to British Hardcore. If they sound this awe-inspiring on record, just imagine what their live show’s like.

‘…Fight’ isn’t just invigorating, it’s inspirational, it’s overwhelming and it will kick your ass, make you shake it and then leave you smiling through bloody teeth at the end of it. Absolutely astonishing.
